Shades of Grey - Mage
This is revised to relate the style differences between me and the previous Mage Admin.Right now, all 9 Traditions are open. Due to us using the Revised information, several Crafts are now part of the Traditions, and are accepted as well as a faction within their Tradition. Applications without Background: As we do allow a -5 XP penalty to those who wish to write a character without a background, I am going to say what characters CAN use this option: First: No Merits or Flaws, no backgrounds(except avatar and Talisman/Wonder/etc) above 3, no Avatar above 2 or below 1, No Talisman/Wonder/etc, no Abilities above 3, no Arete above 1, no more then the basic 6 spheres, and only 1 attribute above 3, no attribute at 5 or below 2, and no Do above 0(if you are not an akashic) or no Do above 1(if you are an Akashic)
*NOTE* Even if you do not write a background, you must still write up your Paradigm and description of your Avatar and its personality.
We use the Revised Rules, but with some alterations, and our code is older. So, I will give some things useful for characters:
1)There was no Avatar Storm in the sense of what happened in the rule books. However, there were localized things throughout the world that did do damage to some mages. These are no longer on going, nor was every mage even effected by them, or even aware of them.(This is an IC mechanic for allowing transfer characters, as I will allow them, but not always un-altered).
2) Storm Warden Merits are allowed, as here they protect not against the Avatar Storm, but against damage to your Avatar in general.
3)Do may not be had by a starting character outside the Akashic Brotherhood, and may not be taken by a Character with any merit allowing him or her training from another tradition.
4)Adversarial backgrounds are allowed, but will be handled after the coded portion of chargen through talking things over with me, as they are not able to be coded with our current code base.
5)While difficult, and generally not likely without EXTREME effort, you CAN raise your Avatar above its starting rating.
What do I look for in an application?
Stats: I like characters that are either balanced, or are focused in an area that is not combat. Especially as there are few combat plots on here...
Backgrounds: Things that make the character useful to other players, such as contacts, influences, resources, or Library are well liked by me.
Spheres: A decent mix. I really prefer most players to have a specialty, and some supporting spheres, but, really, any combination works well.
Background: The Dreaded Background/History. I want to know the following things: Where did you grow up? What kind of environment? Did you and your parents get along? Was there anything 'special' about your family(i.e...you from a Hermetic family, your parents work for the government, anything like that)? Not just when did you awaken, but how, and what were you thinking at that moment? Where were you trained, what was your mentor like, did he/she have any unusual quirks(even if you do not have the Mentor background, these can come in handy...). Any rivals? Any stepped on toes during your training? And, of course, explaining anything that is above what would allow a character without a background. If you have an Arete above 1, please include your Seeking(s) in your background. If you choose to take the challenging option of an Avatar below 1(which..YES, you CAN use magic..you just have to have prime to be able to store any Quintessence), tell me WHY your Avatar is so weak? And, of course, I want at least ONE thing that I could use as a potential story hook.
